Oscar nominees 2014: The robbed and the ones to root for.
9:52 PMBut there were some nominations that we were pretty stoked about.
Let's talk about the snubs first.
The robbed.
Oscar Isaac - Inside Llewyn Davis
I could understand the film not receiving a nomination for Best Film, because honestly, there are some terrific films out there and this film would have drowned amongst the rest anyway. But Oscar Isaac not even getting a nomination for Best Actor? That's an outrage. But I suppose that the actors that did get noms deserve it too, but they should have made some space.
Monsters University
How is this Pixar/Disney film not even nominated for Best Animated Picture? How did The Croods get a nomination instead? These are the questions I asked myself when I found out about the nominations. The prequel to me was one of the most important things to happen in 2013 and it didn't even get jack poop.
Spike Jonze - Her
It was the greatest realisation when I thought about Spike Jonze who had once dated Sofia Coppola make this film which has obvious parallels to Coppola's Lost in Translation, and if you think about it, Her might even be sort of a response film to what Coppola had made in Lost in Translation. Both of them had some of the same themes like isolation and love lost. It felt like magic, so when Jonze was snubbed off a nomination for this film it was a bit uneasy for me to accept it.
Joaquin Phoenix - Her
Speaking of Her, another great actor is robbed off a nomination. Joaquin Phoenix needs an Oscar. He needs it. he needs to know that what he's doing is great and wonderful and deserves love. He needs to know that he should keep on acting. But something tells me that he will get a role of his life in the future and the Academy will have no choice but to notice him and worship him.
Blue is the Warmest Colour
Shocked and upset that the French film about a girl who finds herself through her sexuality isn't even nominated for anything. Not even Best Foreign Language Film or even a Best Actress nod for Adele Exarchopoulos. Nothing.
Pacific Rim
It's a sad, sad world we live in where Pacific Rim isn't nominated for anything, not even Production Design or Visual Effects. This film could have easily beat out all the categories and won, so it's just disappointing.
Now that we've covered our favourites that didn't make the cut, we'll feature some who did get a nomination and who we want to get the statue.
The ones to root for.
12 Years a Slave
I have been excited for this film ever since they had announced it with the likes of Brad Pitt, Steve McQueen, Michael Fassbender and Benedict Cumberbatch signing on for the film. But nothing prepared me for how huge this film was going to be. Lupita Nyong'o had just recently beat out Jennifer Lawrence as Best Supporting Actress at the Critics Choice Awards, and the film itself has already won Golden Globes and all sorts of awards. I can't wait until this film scoops up all the Oscars. Steve McQueen needs his statue(s).
Jared Leto - Dallas Buyers Club
The actor/musician is extremely talented by already pursuing both his goals in acting and his goals with 30 Seconds to Mars. But I personally love it everything he comes out with a film project. I think he can act a lot better than him being in a band, but his band is also really good so what I'm saying is that he needs that Oscar for his work in Dallas Buyers Club.
Leonardo DiCaprio - The Wolf of Wall Street
The entire internet whats him to win that Best Actor Oscar. You don't want to see his sad face again when he realises he doesn't have it in the bag.
It's devastating.
The Grandmaster
A bit upsetting when they didn't get a nod for Best Foreign Language film, but the Hong Kong masterpiece is nominated for Cinematography and Costume Design. Fingers crossed!
Alfonso Cuaron - Gravity
I'm rooting for him to win something, bias-ly because he had directed my favourite Harry Potter film Prisoners of Azkaban, and because he had created such a stunning visionary for film he needs to be thanked with Oscars.
Do you agree with the list? Cool. Do you not agree with the list? Oh that's cool too. Let us know though, if you think differently at bubblebeammag@gmail.com
