Bubblebeam Magazine

Okay, so I'm going to try and speak up about this issue because I have realised that not enough of us in Malaysia are raising this as a serious topic.

For those of you who don't know, last Friday night a man known as Eliot Rodgers went on a killing spree in Isla Vista, California, murdering six people and sending seven more to the hospital. Three of the dead bodies were found later in his apartment. He was even found dead at the wheel of his car with a gunshot wound in his head.

The reason? Rodgers posted videos on Youtube talking about seeking "retribution" against women who he said has rejected him, complaining that he was a virgin and that beautiful women wouldn't pay attention to him. He even said how he would "slaughter every single spoiled, stuck-up, blond slut I see".

I'm not going to go over the complete details, because I'm sure you can find them in the news articles all over the internet. What I want to talk about however, is the disturbing lack of discussion on local feeds.

More importantly, I do not see a lot of anyone, both female and male, posting or discussion the subject. Yeah there is a small handful of you out there in Malaysia, but not enough of us are talking about how Rodgers has not only killed, and posted a video talking about how he was 'entitled to sex and female attention'.

There are also the comments under his Youtube page, countless of them talking about... ugh. I just get sick at the thought of mentioning them.

You know what there are just so many more of these assholes commenting on the videos why don't you take your pick at your favourite satan dick turd.

While I do want to go on and write a fucking novel about how what he did wasn't okay, today I will just try to point out a few things about our culture, even in the very open society of social media.

And this doesn't just apply to Malaysia, this applies to everyone in the world.

Why don't more of us girls post and write and talk about this issue on a very wide social media platform like Twitter and Facebook, where most of the people we know and love and spend time with are there with you too?

From my own perspective, NONE of the girls in Malaysia talked about this issue and tell everyone that is it NOT OKAY to treat this killing spree like a "lesson to girls to suck male dicks" so that we DON'T get murdered.

And I don't blame you all for not talking about it. Here's why. We're FRIGHTENED.

Us girls are SCARED, FRIGHTENED of men. Congratulations. You did it, guys.

We're scared that if we do even speak up a little about it, guys will start stopping us and say things like, "#NOTALLGUYS are like that".

We're scared that they might push us off the table for our say and for trying to teach you what's right.

We're scared that you're not going to make our opinions seem relevant.

We're scared that you don't want to hear us.

We're scared that we might seem crazy.

We already have this unwanted fear in all of us that you might hurt us.

And then in the WAKE of this mens rights serial killer incident, men can still talk about it like it is OUR fault, and we can't have our say without being undervalued.

We can't have our say without you insulting us, or denying our opinions instead of listening and learning that men have been brainwashed that they all are entitled to sex, as long as they are the "supreme gentleman".

Okay, so not all guys are like that. Then why are there so many of you literally yelling on the internet on Youtube no less about how girls should "learn our lesson", and thinking that none of this is the fault of the "nice guy" mindset?

And so very little of you speak up about how females should not be murdered because we don't want to date you, or whether we want to suck your dicks or not. Instead, you have the mentality to defend your own male skin, rather than agree that it is time to stop with the "supreme gentleman" mentality.

You can say that not all guys are like this, but I don't see any proof.

Taking another route from last year's theme of punk rock fashion, this year's long awaited MET Gala has chosen the fantastic and dramatic classical looks of Charles James including big, beautiful dresses that resemble sort of like expensive wedding cakes.

The MET Gala has always been a fashion godsend because of the many celebrities of the moment attending the Gala and wearing their own take of the year's theme.

Here are 5 of our favourite looks at the recent Charles James: Beyond Fashion MET Gala.

5. KATE MARA in VALENTINO

This is one of our favourites because of the interesting vintage look actress Kate Mara wears for the Gala. It's big and dramatic, just like a lot of Charles James dresses but it also has some of Kata Mara in it too. The House of Cards actress' new blonde hair also fits with this look.

4. EMMA STONE in THAKOON

With her boyfriend and Spiderman co-star Andrew Garfield by her side, Emma Stone had one of the most memorable and strongest looks of the night. Her striking pink ensemble caught our attention but it didn't give off that weird uncomfortable shock we usually get when we see someone wearing all pink. Her easygoing fishtail braid made the dress look a bit more relaxed and carefree without it being too casual.

3. DITA VON TEESE in ZAC POSEN

You wouldn't believe that the burlesque artist is 41 but Dita Von Teese doesn't look her age at all! She wore a fun mermaid cut gown with animated looking drapes on the bottom. Teese wore the dress with her signature vintage inspired black hair and make up, and with a classic red clutch from Roger Vivier.

2. RIHANNA in STELLA McCARTNEY

Rihanna was brave to don a bare cropped top of a dress to pair with a more conservative bottom, but she could pull the look of easily, like it was nothing. The singer's Stella dress was one of the most talked about looks of the night. And though it is a dangerous and controversial look, she still looks utterly fantastic and we couldn't imagine a better suited dress for her that night.

1. LIU WEN in ZAC POSEN

Though we haven't really heard of her much, her look being the look of the night has definitely put her on the fashion world's map as a bigger name in fashion. The Chinese model wore a Zac Posen dress from a line inspired by Charles James himself, and the dramatic and voluptuous green satin gown was the best example of the creative genius of Charles James in the 1950s.

"Game of Thrones" might be the biggest thing to watch right now, but there have also been some pretty great shows around that not a lot of people have been talking about yet, and we think that's the charm of the shows that we are going to name.

So sit back and look through the shows that you think might catch your fancy, and who knows? You might find your next favourite obsession right here.

ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK

There is no doubt that this show gets around through word of mouth, so you probably have heard of the Netflix based television comedy series. It is probably in your list of shows you've wanted to watch but you're still getting there. "Orange if the New Black" is a story of a woman in her thirties who is sentenced to fifteen months in prison. Add the story to a few memorable characters and you've got yourself an addictive black comedy.

THE PACIFIC

This 2010 miniseries is still one of the most well made mini war-based epic, and in addition to it being the brainchild of Steven Spielberg, and the three different real life stories of US Marines, "The Pacific" still has a cult following, along with the other war-based miniseries like "Band of Brothers" and "Generation Kill", but this series' cinematography and actor performances made this one something to remember.

HEMLOCK GROVE

Executive produced by "Hostel" director Eli Roth, "Hemlock Grove" is a Netflix Original horror thriller series about a fictional town in Pennsylvania, where brutal murders have stirred up rumours as two people try to uncover the secrets. Starring Bill Skarsgard, Alexander's attractively strange looking young brother, and Famke Janssen, the series is a must watch for people who are into the Eli Roth approved gore and horror.

THE KILLING

Based on a Danish television series, "The Killing" is an underrated crime drama following the various murder investigations by homicide detectives Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) and Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman). While the series was nominated for several major awards in its first season, it has drawn a mixed reception from critics, but still has a good number of following from fans. Though it is already cancelled, you can still watch the three seasons by AMC.

ORPHAN BLACK

Known as a critic and fan darling, Tatiana Maslany plays several versions of herself in one series, with totally different personalities. But this isn't just "Parent Trap", "Orphan Black" showcases deep and dark roots about the moral and ethical implications of human cloning and its effect on issues of personal identity.

THE MUSKETEERS

The BBC's miniseries about Alexandre Dumas' classic "Three Musketeers" is an adaptation that strongly visualizes action and adventure, as well as the expected great performances by the starring actors including Luke Pasqualino from "Skins" and the guy for "Doctor Who" himself Peter Capaldi.

BAD EDUCATION

Another BBC project you should give a go watching is Jack Whitehall's "Bad Education". Following the comedian and writer's nonsensical humour and the fun plotline of a really bad teacher at a British school, the concept is so successful that an American cable network is planning to remake it.

TRUE DETECTIVE

Bringing the best ideas in cinema in terms of cast, cinematography, directing, story and director, "True Detective" is a must watch to the rest of you who haven't watched it yet. Though it is only at one season and stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson aren't planning to come back for a second season, the Cary Fukunaga directed spectacle is a visual delight and the blood infused crime thriller drama about a 17 year hunt for a serial killer should still be something you need to get your hands on, quick.

I'm pretty sure most of you have already heard about this show called True Detective and many of you have already watched the whole season. But there are still some of you who are still hesitant to begin watching it.

Like we did with our Hannibal post, we aim to help push you into the right direction, which is to watch True Detective.

Created by Nic Pizzolatto and starring fresh Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey and Woody "drunk guy from the Hunger Games" Woody Harrelson, True Detective is basically about the lives of two detectives, Rust Cohle and Martin Hart, and how they needed to solve messed up murder crimes that took them 17 years to solve.

If that paragraph doesn't already fuel your jet engine to take you to France, read on for more reasons to work your appetite up a little.

1. 1995 Rust Cohle.

Alright Alright Alright

You still think that actor Matthew McConaughey is a little out of this world, from his infamous string of romantic comedies to him literally thanking himself at the 2014 Oscars when he received his award for Best Actor, but this won't let anything stop you from having a deep appreciation for Detective Rust Cohle in 1995.

Taken from Giphy.

You won't be able to prepare yourself from having a soft spot/hard on for McConaughey's character, especially when the story takes you back to 1995. It is arguably the best time for appreciating him, in character and aesthetically.

Can you handle both the hair flip AND the shirt lift? Can you?

But mostly aesthetically.

Cohle might be rough around the edges, but his cool, sweet and sour personality will also win your heart. And having great character in a show you want to watch does not hurt one bit.

2. Cary Fukunaga

Okay here's why I'm extra excited talking about Cary Fukunaga. There are two major things about him that are extraordinary and should be a great reason for watching this particular show.

His 2009 film Jane Eyre (which was also one of his first major projects), based on the classic novel by Charlotte Bronte, starred Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender and it was critically praised for his cinematography and aesthetically pleasing way of directing shots that equaled his own vision.

What I love about film directors taking on television is that they don't compromise their directing style in any way, making each episode in the show look like a film they would do, like Fincher with House of Cards. Fukunaga's True Detective definitely proves this observation.

The second thing about Fukunaga is how he looks like this:

Even his long haired beardy hobo state is pretty great.

3. The crime scenes.

Each scene gives off a creepy, dark, mysterious vibe and they will undoubtedly leave you feeling a little empty and morose on the inside. It's a good thing, don't worry.

4. It can also be hilariously iconic.

Great shows have great iconic moments and props so that viewers can buy things that relate to the show and feel like they own a piece of it, like the Big Hug Mug that Rust uses or the beer can men he made.

There were also equally iconic moments in scripts that involved a lot of 'philosophical' views.

...mostly from Rust Cohle.

And Woody Harrelson's Marty Hart usually calls him out.

But mostly, the icon of the entire show is Rust.

5. That 6 minute shot.

Shooting a six minute shot with no cuts or edits is a fantastic feat on its own. The entire view was spectacular and heart pounding and fast paced and dramatic and violent and smart and everything you could dream about in a television show.

You can watch the scene below, and it also won't really give anything away so you can still safely watch it. However, watching the entire show will piece things together.

There were actually more reasons we wanted tot fit into this article, like how great the storyline was and how it also had HBO approved boobs, as well as how it makes you want to help guess who the culprit is the entire show, and how when you do find out it will just get more intense from there.

We're also excited for Season 2, which they had already announced. Sadly, McConaughey and Harrelson won't be the featured star detectives anymore.

But rumour has it, Brad Pitt might join the second season instead!

Joe Wright's new "Pan" film project, which is his version of J. M. Barrie's classic "Peter Pan", has gotten a lot of media attention and angry fans lately due to the latest casting choice.

Rooney Mara is in final negotiations for the role of Tiger Lily.

As great of an actress, and as beautiful Mara is, we still can't get over the fact that they chose a white actress to play a Native American role, a role which is already scarce to find as it is for a real Native American actress.

The worst part is that we can't even say that they tried looking for a Native, as Prospector Films tweeted a response saying that, "(Native American actress) Kawennahere Devery Jacobs auditioned auditioned for the role but was told that they were looking for a Caucasian instead."

We love Rooney, and we're really excited for the film but this decision made by them was terribly irresponsible. So if they do decide to pick someone else, we at Bubblebeam Mag are proud to present these Native American actresses that could rock the part as well as Rooney could!

Devery Jacobs

She auditioned for the role and they turned her down because she was Native American? The 20 year old actress has been turning heads since she had been nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Aila in Rhymes for Young Ghouls, at the Canadian Screen Awards. Plus, she's breathtakingly gorgeous. How could they have turned her down?

Q'orianka Kilcher

Q'orianka had already took the world by storm with her role as Pocahontas in Terrence Malick's "A New World" epic when she was just 14 years old! Now that she's 24, she could fit in the role as well as Rooney in terms of age, and she has the terrific acting chops to boot. A bonus fact about her is that she's a great environmental and human rights activist.

Julia Jones

The English, Native American (Choctaw and Chickasaw) and African-American actress has starred in the Twilight movies and ER, and has since than gained the adoration and a following worldwide. Twilight does that to people.

Vanessa Hudgens

She might only be a quarter Native American, but she can still look the part of Tiger Lily. She also has a massive fan following from her High School Musical days and she's not been stopping since with film projects like Spring Break and Machete Kills. Having her on board would also attract a lot more people to watch the film.

Ashley Callingbull

The Canadian actress even starred in Blackstone, an unmuted exploration of community, power and politics on a First Nation reserve. So she definitely fits the part. She's also a model, a prize winning beauty queen and an international motivational speaker for TED talks and Harvard. What more could you possibly want?

There are also probably more actresses that are of Native American descent who are out there and who are just waiting for a huge Native American role like Tiger Lily in Pan to come one in a blue moon, but the role would only be given to Caucasians.

Lots of other roles that were meant for other races, like olive skinned Katniss Everdeen of The Hunger Games, ended up being a role for Jennifer Lawrence.

The issue of given roles of other races to white actors is a big one, and it is something that needs to stop at some point, because actors of different races can do just as good of a job as Caucasians, and they can sell tickets (look at Pacific Rim!), we just need to be given the chance.
